Moorepark Trial

A common misconception is that fast feeding saves time in the calf shed.

Conducted at the Moorepark Research Farm in Ireland, this trial investigated the most time and labour efficient calf feeding method while still getting good weight gain.

Weight gains and total time caring for the calves were monitored. The care time included treating sick calves, calibrating computerised feeders, cleaning equipment and changing bedding.

All calves were housed in the same barn with some calves being group fed and other individually.

The group fed calves were fed from the Milk Bar 5 fitted with Milk Bar Teats.

The individually kept calves were fed from buckets.

Calves were fed the same quantities of milk replacer with 22% protein and 20% fat. Ad libitum water and starter ration we available to all calves. Calves were monitored for daily weight gains and quantity of consumed starter ration.
